Second densely-plotted thriller from director John Dahl. Michael Williams (Nicolas Cage) is an ex-marine who drifts into the little town of Red Rock West after failing to get a job on an oil rig. He stops off at a bar, where the owner Wayne mistakes him for a hitman he is expecting to kill his philandering wife.

Opportunistically, Michael takes the $5000 and goes off to see the wife. However, she seduces him and offers him double the money to turn the tables. Michael takes the money and runs, but his luck turns when he hitches a ride with the wrong man...
