In 1927 Paris, with her art dealer husband Stephan (Anthony Higgins) jailed for dealing in contraband works, India-born Marya Zelli (Isabelle Adjani) had no recourse but to turn to his acquaintances, the older and eccentric British couple H.J and Lois Heidler (Alan Bates, Maggie Smith). It doesn't take long, however, for her to get swept up in her new benefactors' decadent games of seduction and betrayal. Moody Merchant/Ivory take on the Jean Rhys novel also stars Sheila Gish, Suzanne Flon.
