Daisy Miller is a novel by Henry James, which first appeared in, Cornhill Magazine, in June-July 1878, and in book form the following year. The novel portrays the courtship of the beautiful American girl, Daisy Miller, for Winterbourne, a sophisticated countrywoman of her. Courtship is hampered by her coquetry, which is frowned upon by other American expats, when they meet in Switzerland and Italy. Annie "Daisy" Miller, and Frederick Winterbourne, meet for the first time in Vevey, Switzerland, in a garden of the large hotel where Winterbourne is supposedly vacationing from her studies, although it is rumored that she is actually in love with an older lady. Both are presented by Randolph Miller, Daisy's 9-year-old younger brother. Little Randolph believes that his hometown, Schenectady, New York, is absolutely superior to all of Europe. Daisy, however, is absolutely delighted with the continent, especially with the high society where she wishes to enter.
