The aim of this book is to examine civic society in Ulster towns from the mid-late eighteenth century. The study will also make comparisons and contracts between the towns that were developing rapidly throughout the century. It will study the econonic, social and political development of Derry and Strabane and the towns of east Ulster, Armagh, Belfast, Carrickfergus, Newry and Lisburn. The book will trace the commercial growth of these towns, examining the type of industries that were established and the various goods that were imported and exported. It will also look at the role of the merchantile community, especially in relation to Belfast. The study will also examine the social life of Ulster towns. It will provide an anlysis of the various type of events enjoyed both by the elite and general populace that took place throughout the province. They included the siege commemorations in Derry, street processions in Belfast, the theatre, balls, concerts, cock-fighting and horse racing. The study will also explore the different type of clubs and societies that were established in the different towns. The book will also look at politics in Ulster in the eighteenth-century.
