Performance of Geogrid Reinforced Soil Barriers of Landfill Covers: Centrifuge and Numerical Study

The present day challenge to geo-environmental engineers is to dispose municipal, hazardous, and low-level radioactive waste in an environmentally safe manner. Wastes that are generated in large volume can be reduced or recycled but finally needs to be disposed in engineered landfills. Engineered landfills are known to undergo significant differential settlements and hence there is a need to investigate the performance of hydraulic barriers against distortion. This book reveals the deformation behaviour of clay based landfill covers subjected to differential settlements through centrifuge model studies and finite element analysis. A detailed study on the influence of settlement rate, thickness of the soil barrier, overburden pressure and strengthening measure in the form of geogrid reinforcement on the deformation behaviour were presented. Based on rigours analysis, it was found that performance of geogrid reinforced soil barrier was found to be many times superior to unreinforced soil barrier. The book illustrates conceptual comparison of physically observed centrifuge test results and numerical results which can benefit students, researchers and geotechnical engineers.
