Universities and Economic Development: a Case Study of the University of Zambia

In the current knowledge economy universities are expected to be engines for economic development. Using the University of Zambia as a case study, this book is a focused exploration of the conditions under which universities can make a significant and sustained contribution to economic development. The book explores four issues, namely, (i) national development policies, governance and coordination; (ii) university institutional policies and activities; (iii) university academic core; and (iv) externally funded projects in the university. This book is a useful research aid for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. In addition, this book challenges governments to redefine the role of universities as engines for development and to steer universities towards economic development by implementing appropriate strategies. Also, universities are challenged to re-affirm their role as engines for economic development. Besides, the book contends that externally funded projects in universities must be aligned with the missions of universities in order to strengthen both their academic and peripheral cores.
