Over the last few years, the concern about howdemographic changes, especially population aging,affect macroeconomic variables, public sector fiscalbalance and intergenerational transfers. A relatedquestion is how the provision of social securitybenefits affects retirement decisions of olderworkers. The literature on retirement behavior indeveloped nations is extensive, but little is knownabout this issue in emerging economies. The rapidpopulation aging in developing countries raisesconcerns about living conditions, social support andhealth care provision for the elderly. This bookprovides new insights into the debate on socialsecurity and retirement by analyzing Brazil, one ofthe few emerging economies with both rapid populationaging and large public pension system. The resultsshow a clear picture of a process of increasing earlyretirement over the past fifty years. The book alsoshow that the pattern of retirement are nothomogenous across sub-groups of population. The bookshould be useful for professionals in demography,economic development, or anyone else interested inpublic policy and population aging.
