Andros, The Infamous Exploits of John Gideon
D R Dobbins
When a night of smuggling goes awry, there is only one man to clean up the mess, John Gideon. Under the guise of a fishing trip John and his clients, Mack Stevens and Tim Elliot, speed from Nassau's bustling harbor to a remote destination on the southern end of Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas. Their job is to recover 40 bales of marijuana tossed from a small airplane a week prior. But what seemingly starts as a low risk venture ends up becoming a struggle for survival. Reaching the island, John and his associates journey into the bowels of Andros via an artery called Deep Creek. The atmosphere is claustrophobic compared to the open sea. Hundred year old pines shade the river. The brackish water smells primeval. And even though the boat's engine roars in their ears, the river seems quiet. But soon the melancholy is broken when the first glimpse of the drop zone appears. Bales are scattered throughout palmettos and pines. An hour later, the men are reveling in their success as the speedboat strains to keep a fast pace under the weight of the compressed bales of weed. However, as the last turn opens and the sparkling glint of the ocean emerges under Deep Creek's bridge, almost a dozen armed policemen on top open fire. Mac and Tim duck behind the contraband as John rapidly maneuvers the boat to avoid the spray of bullets. John retreats inland then makes a fateful decision to ditch the boat, trading it for the dense jungle interior of the island. For three nights and four days, the authorities hunt them. Each day is an exercise in the art of avoid-and-evade, and each night is a battle against mosquitos and despair. John's only escape is in his nightly dreams of past love, adventure, and a jail sentence he once endured as a teenager. But, will memories and luck be enough to keep his sanity and out of the clutches of the island's police force until he and his associates are liberated, or will time, like an ebbing tide, run out?
