Travels in the English Lake District
William E Cullen
Many lakes and hills have been left out of the list. They would probably need many visits to see them all. The lake district is in the county of Cumbria in the north west of England and is a very popular spot for visitors. The main towns in the Lake district are: Keswick beside Derwent Water, Ambleside being at the northern extent of Windermere and Rydal Water, and Bowness-on-Windermere, by Lake Windermere itself. Cockermouth, Kendal, Barrow-in-Furness, Ulverston and Penrith are slightly outside the Lake District. Roads are: A6 and M6 to the east, A591 from Kendal and Windermere to Keswick, and the A66 Penrith to Keswick and beyond are the main ones. There are also obviously B roads connecting all sorts of places, and probably the most fun can be had from ascending two of the high passes, Wrynose and Hardnott. The main towns all have hotels, shops and other attractions, whilst the lakes offer superb water sports and other diversions. This book is not a travel guide but a logbook to remember your travels there, something to jog your memories in the future. Please be active, walk up a few hills and onto the lakes, but also remember to have the correct clothing for your jaunts. Respect the weather (it rains a lot!) and the terrain, carry Kendal Mint Cake in case you are stuck up a hill for a few hours, but most importantly, enjoy yoursel
