The Last Delivery

When a slick doctor friend invites Mark Zeller to join an elite group of physicians working for an abortion broker that farms out the doctors to local clinics, he declines. Sure he's frustrated by his inability to make a difference in the lives of the inner city clinic patients he serves-and it would be sweet to pay off his college loans-but he rejects the idea of such a mercenary approach to medicine. Then he gets devastating news about a patient, and has a change of heart. He can't make a difference here, so he may as well tend to his bank account. He calls his friend and accepts the job. Once he learns to disassociate, it's easy and lucrative, performing one abortion after another. And he's befriended by an older nurse, Suzanne, who becomes a kind of mentor, helping guide him through the emotional terrain of his new career. Soon, Mark's heart is awakened by a dedicated ER physician named Amal. She introduces him to a colleague who's a successful fertility specialist. Mark can't stop thinking about the difference in their jobs, and it leads to a revelation: It might be medically possible to transplant a live aborted fetus into an infertile woman. Ignoring the moral and legal ramifications, he embarks on secret experiments ... and eventually succeeds. He's poised on the brink of changing the world and changing his life when a shattering loss nearly breaks him ... and Mark Zeller discovers the cost of success might be too great.
