Tobe and Hila are on a quest: to vanquish Krolius the Necromancer. After the Necromancer's reign of terror on the Northern Foothills, young mapmaker Tobe Sunshard and his brutish companion Hila Hangmaw have vowed to put an end to the evil bison's scourge. Their enchanted compass leads them to the forging town of Holmfirth, spelling out doom for its inhabitants as Krolius' presence makes itself clear: stagnant air, thralls lurking in abandoned houses, and a devastating malfunction of the town's Aer-detecting defense automaton. To make matters worse, the death of Holmfirth's sacred blacksmith has left the town divided. Without the blacksmith to perform Vulholm's Prayer, some townsfolk refuse to work their forges in fear of angering Holmfirth's Patron Eld, Vulholm, while others persist. In the center of this divide is the blacksmith's husband and the only engineer who can fix Holmfirth's automaton-but when they needed him most, he disappeared. It's up to Tobe and Hila to find the engineer and bridge the gap between the people of Holmfirth. Will they find him before Krolius makes his move, or will the Necromancer land the final blow against the dying town?
