Maureen, a young woman undergoing routine heart surgery, dies on an operating room table. Her partner is offered expressions of sympathy, but no medical explanation for the cause of her death. Suspicious, he initiates an investigation that uncovers a staggering truth. Maureen died an iatrogenic death--that is, she died as a result of medical treatment. Powerful people prefer the circumstances of the tragedy remain buried--along with Maureen. The hospital uses privacy rules to deny access to conclusions made by its own medical advisory committee. The responsible physician pretends he merely witnessed an inexplicable act of God. Defense attorneys claim medical uncertainty as an excuse to manipulate and intimidate courtroom opponents. Maureen's avenger reaches the only logical conclusion. Justice is never awarded. It must be seized.
