"From white houses of burned oyster shells, stone and wood, people as dark as their primordial ancestors begin to stir and move into the light." Thus begins Soul Passage, a historical saga of three generations of one family struggling to find "freedom." Each generation is seen in the context of the times, connected only by family ties that are torn by the turbulence that is American history. Beginning with Jimmie, a slave child in the 1840s; Sam, caught up in the turbulence of a labor strike in 1900; and grandson Jimmie, a young musician exploring Chicago's jazz scene in the 1920s, the story examines how each generation is defined by their times.
