Al's wife, Hope, has been dead these past four years, yet Al has left her books out and her coat hanging on a hook by the front door. His daughter seems stuck in time, too, playing with stuffed animals despite being nearly a teenager Their static lives receive a rude jolt though, when a local juvenile delinquent steals Hope's old Firebird and crashes it into a tree. The car and the task of restoring it become a source of redemption to all who touch it until the car itself takes on a greater meaning. "Cars don't have souls. They have attitudes," Al explains to his daugjhter, but in the end no one is quite certain whether that is entirely true.
