The Life and Work of Mary Aikenhead: Foundress of the Congregation of Irish Sisters of Charity 1787-1858

A biography of Mary Aikenhead (Sister Mary Augustine), foundress of the Sisters of Charity, detailing this great woman's life detailing her time in Sandymount, Gardiner Street, St. Vincent's Hospital, Donnybrook, Australia, Ireland, and so very much more. On September 1, 1815 the first members of the new Order took their vows, Sister Mary Augustine being appointed Superior-General.

Initially, the Irish Sisters visited and assisted poor people in orphanages, hospitals, gaols and in their homes. Later, they opened a house of refuge for young girls and started giving religious instruction in schools.

Growing numbers in the Congregation and generous donations enabled Mother Mary Aikenhead to open and conduct Catholic schools and hospitals for poor people in Ireland. Later The Sisters of Charity were the first Religious Institute of women to arrive in Australia. Illustrations include rare glimpses at Mrs. John O'Brien, Archbishop Murray, Father Peter Kenney, and The Stanhope Street Convent, just no name a few.
