One of the greatest American presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt built a coalition of labour, ethnic, urban, low-income and African-American voters that underwrote the unstoppable Democratic Party ascendancy until 1980. Over his four terms, he led the United States through the second world war, sparked a peacetime recovery from the Great Depression, and invented the modern presidency through his strong leadership and organisational style. Iwan Morgan takes a fresh look at FDR, showing how his leadership drove the United States of America to become the most successful country of the twentieth century. This definitive biography also covers the history of the Supreme Court in this period, Roosevelt's unique ability to communicate directly with his citizens, and the legacy of his achievements.
In fluid, immensely readable prose, Morgan focuses on the ways in which FDR transformed the presidency, to create a more modern version of the institution we know today - an assertive, democratic executive able to meet the challenges facing the US domestically and internationally. Connecting FDR's legacy to the present day, Morgan argues that Biden's presidency echoes Roosevelt's challenge - to transform America anew.
