After living in the depths of poverty, despair and abuse in the desperate town of Catfish City, Mississippi, Sly Shula and his siblings are rescued by a protective aunt and uncle on Sly's 17th birthday and brought to safety and a hopeful future, outside the town of Creation. Sly, a bright but illiterate teenager with a driving thirst for knowledge, reinvents himself in Creation. His inspiring journey from darkness to light takes him through several decades, mirroring the 17-year life cycle of his beloved cicada, a resilient insect with which he is obsessed.
