Das Platzen der Technologieblase im Jahr 2000 und die Finanzkrise im Jahr 2007 sind hierfur eindrucksvolle Beispiele. Bei einer historischen Betrach-tung der Aktienmarkte ist es leicht zu erkennen, dass Borsenhaussen und Borsencrashes die Regel und keine Ausnahme sind. Anleger investieren in Aufschwungsphasen haufig in junge, wachstumsstarke, aber finanz- und ertragsschwache Unternehmen. Umgekehrt setzen sie nach einem Borsencrash auf wachstumsschwachere, dafur aber ertrags- und finanzstarke Unternehmen. Diese Vorgehensweise fuhrt oft zu grossen Verlusten bei Investoren. In der Praxis wird haufig auf Value Investing als Strategie zur nachhaltigen Performanceerzielung verwendet. Benjamin Graham gilt als Begrunder des Value Investings. Er veroffentlichte im Jahr 1934 gemeinsam mit David Dodd das Buch Security Analysis. Graham und Dodd vertreten die Ansicht, dass Investoren nur Aktien kaufen sollten, deren Kurse unter ihren fundamental gerechtfertigten Werten notieren. Am Aktienmarkt gelten aber eigene Gesetze. In Aufschwungphasen verdrangt die Euphorie haufig die Vernunft der Anleger und diese erleiden im anschliessenden Borsenabschwung hohe Verluste, da sie fur die Aktien mehr bezahlt haben als sie tatsachlich Wert sind. Um diese Fehler zu vermeiden, wird Anlegern haufig geraten, die Strategie des Value Investings zu verwenden. Doch konnen mit der Value-Strategie dauerhaft bessere Ergebnisse erzielt werden? Because I happen to share the same first name with the central character in my book, it is inevitable that most people will want to know if this story was based on my own life. Well, the answer to this question is yes and no! Some of the events that faced Michael Golden are substantiated in part on actual occurrences that I experienced in my own lifetime. The difference between the main character and me is that, although I would like to believe I possess the same heart and soul as Michael Benjamin Golden, I have lacked his keen mental and physical attributes. Michael Benjamin Golden is a part of me, but he is not me. More than anything else, I envy the relationship that Michael Golden and Rachel Kaplan experienced inside the pages of my book. And I share in his most fervent wish that one day I will also find my "soul mate," if not in this lifetime, then hopefully in the next. In fact, one of my favorite passages within the book is when Michael Golden suggests to Susan that if she will open up her heart, "I am certain you will find a kind soul whose life would be enhanced with you in it... Surely there is a man whom you have met who might be a little insecure, but has a good heart. A man who is gentle, compassionate, and caring, but may not be particularly handsome, or outgoing, or gifted. A man who has a heart of gold, but may be a little awkward in social settings. A man who may not possess all the physical and mental attributes he would have wished for himself, but is a good person deep down inside. Metaphorically Speaking: "Susan Bowman, if you are still waiting to meet your soul mate, perhaps you will want to ask me, Mike Roth, to play with you on the see-saw after I have drawn my final breath; and my earthly life concludes.
