Free radical production in the body increases during exercise. This is accompanied by a concomitant increase in the endogenous antioxidant system. However, when this antioxidant system is overwhelmed by increased generation of free radicals, oxidative stress will occur. Oxidative stress that leads to lipid peroxidation and damage to cellular proteins and DNA has been implicated in muscular fatigue. One of the strategies to ameliorate exercise-induced oxidative stress is by ensuring that the antioxidant system in our body is functioning optimally.
