Randol fears his promiscuity will be discovered by Elizabeth and is sure his marriage will end with divorce. Knowing the financial burdens that will arise with a divorce, Randol's mistress suggests drugging Elizabeth making her believe she is losing her mind. This would lessen the financial burden and ease the mind of Randol's father, Paul, who does not approve of spending money frivolously.
