Beneath a scorching hot sun in the post-Civil War Arizona Territory lies the town of Fuerte Viejo, an ancient village struggling to become a mining center. The lone town constable, Edwin Brody, likewise struggles to overcome alcohol and depression. Dressmaker Beverly Harvill runs from a past of her own, even as she assists Brody. McLeroy Banks is a newcomer with a civic mind and expressman Peter Heydt is the town conscience, willing to aid the cause of justice even at his own peril. These characters experience greed, betrayal, lust, violence, redemption, and the bigotry of themselves and others as they endure the wait for the arrival of the bandit gang Los Hombres. All this while suffering the omnipresent and overwhelming heat In Old Pima County.
